1987....how it all began . . .

I have a passion for horsepower!  The first 52 years of my life have been spent learning everything I could about and enjoying real, live horses ....for the last 12 years I have bred and raised miniature horses exclusively.   The second half will be devoted more to horsepower of a different kind--motorcycles.  My husband is probably saying things like, "it's about time," or "what took you so long."  But, mostly, I think he is just glad that instead of having 30 horses, I only have 8 and that I am joining him in his adventures more often.  I never thought I would see the day that he had more motorcycles than I have horses, but the day has come.

I am married to a motorcycle fanatic.  I suppose I always knew it would come to this...one of my first dates with the motorcycle fanatic was a long day drip on his Honda 750 Interceptor some 22 years ago (right).   What  woman wouldn't have loved this combination?

Our honeymoon in 1989 took us to St. Augustine, FL, riding on his '87 Yamaha FJ1200, my favorite bike (left).  He bought it new, and he still owns it....it's still my favorite.

After all those years riding on the back, I was ready to pilot my own.  Early in the dating game, I did have my very own enduro, a Suzuki SP-125, but since it was so tall and I am so short, it was very intimidating ( to say the least)  because I could not touch the ground except for my tippy-toes.  I lost interest quickly.

Fast forward to 2009....

Raising horses has to be THE most confining activity in the world.  Gestation length is 11 months, but the foals can be born early or problems can arise (and there were many!).  I would stay home literally for two months at a stretch.  Needless to say, this is NOT conducive to going on motorcycle trips.   I have more time to enjoy my horses, since I have fewer, and more time to get on the bike(s) and ride.  Hubby found the perfect bike for me to learn on in December of 2007....a '75 Yamaha DT125!  I can touch almost flat-footed, it's easy to start and runs like a champ.   My next step was to take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course , which I did over July 4th weekend of 2008 and now feel a lot more confident.  I realize just how much I didn't know and how much more I have to learn.  I would recommend this course to anyone who may be thinking about riding a motorcycle!  I have quite a few miles under my belt now, and every time I get on a motorcycle, I learn something new.  I am having a blast!

So now you know where the term "little horsepower" comes into play....a meshing of two worlds!
